Are Plastic Water Bottles Safe?
Did you know that your water bottle could affect your health negatively? Recent studies have shown that your health could be at risk because of a dangerous chemical known as Bisphenol-A (BPA). Keep reading to find out more about BPA and the alternatives to avoiding it.
Most of the plastic water bottles that are made by bottle-maker companies leaches Bisphenol-A. This is a very harmful chemical that is unsafe and can affect the unborn of pregnant women. Bisphenol- A has an analogous structure which is similar to that of the hormone estrogen and hence its interference with the body affects the hormonal make up.
BPA has shown to cause many diseases such as uterine cancer, breast cancer, obesity and even diabetes. BPA is leach from plastic water bottles and the older, hotter, and more warn out the plastic gets the more BPA that is leached.
To keep away from these harmful chemicals, you need to switch to water bottles which are made with HDPE plastic. The best way is to completely cut out plastic water bottles and replace them with stainless steel or glass water bottles. Stay away from lexan bottles as well. Many companies that understand the current need for alternatives to plastic water bottles have come up with environmental friendly bottles that are safe to consume water.
One of the most well known water bottle manufacturers is Nalgene which recently released the Everday Line series which doesn’t contain any BPA. Another company that makes safe plastic water bottles is Camelbak which has also recently released its Sipper Better Bottle and Podium Bottle. These are just a few examples of safe water bottles that are free of the hazardous BPA or any other chemicals.
An alternative that takes the word safe a little deeper is stainless steel water bottles. Stainless steel do not leach any chemicals while keeping the water as fresh and crisp as plastic water bottles. Another great thing about them is they are 100% recyclable and made with recycled material as well as being very durable. One of the best stainless steel water bottles is the Klean Kanteen. One more alternative is aluminum water bottles. The leader in aluminum is Sigg which makes many colorful and stylish water bottles.
Let’s take a peak in to bottles that are safe to consume water. With “#1” mark, you should be using these bottles only once. However, bottles with #7 and #3 shouldn’t be used at all. These bottles are at a higher risk of leaching the toxic Bisphenol-A. The other safe water bottles are “#2”, “#4”, “#5”, and “#6”. However, the ideal way to stay away from these toxic bottles is by switching to stainless steel or aluminum water bottles.
So now you know that plastic bottles with lexan and Bisphonel-A is very harmful and hazardous. Just switch to stainless steel or glass bottles which may be a little uncomfortable at first but is surely better than the risks of plastic.
