<p>In January 2003, the Journal of the American Medical Association featured a study finding that obesity appears to lessen life expectancy, especially among young adults. The study showed an obese 20-year-old white male, (5&#8242;10&#8243;)178cm and weighing (288 pounds) 130kg was estimated to lose 13 years of his life as a result of obesity.</p>
<p>It is now well research that a Western diet that leads to obesity may actually act to stimulate the growth of cancer cells. It is never too late to improve your health through healthful eating and adopting a more health-giving lifestyle. Here are simple steps to follow which can make an immediate improvement to your health and vitality.</p>
<p><b>1. Check to see if you are overweight or obese.</b><br />
To find out your BMI you need to divide your weight (measured in kilos) by your height (measured in metres) squared. If the result is greater than 25, your health may be improved by losing weight.</p>
<p><b>2. Match your diet to your body’s requirements.</b><br />

The growth of the food industry has made high-fat, inexpensive meals available throughout the world, and bigger size has become a major selling point. McDonald’s sells the Big Mac, Wendy’s offers the Big Classic, and Burger King pushes the Whopper. Do you notice anything similar with the names of these burgers? A large coke at most fast-food restaurants is now 32 ounces and 310 calories and at one time not too long ago was just 12 ounces and 180 calories. If fact 20 years ago kids drank an average of 8 ounces of soda a day; today they drink an average of 24 ounces a day. The food abundance we’re surrounded with has secured a spot in your mind, causing intense cravings and compulsions, and you must do something about it.</p>
<p>Astonishingly, a 12-ounce can of soda contains 8 to 10 teaspoons of sugar and many teenagers consume as many as 7 cans a day, which equals nearly 1000 empty calories and 60 teaspoons of sugar. Try this on for size: kids today drink almost twice the amount of soda as they do milk.</p>
<p>To make matters worse, the fast-food industry makes promotional links with leading toy makers, giving away simple toys with their kids’ meals and selling higher profile toys at a discount. It’s a clever way to target kids, and a successful toy promotion can double or triple the weekly sales volume of children’s meals. Did you know that the second most recognized fictional character is Ronald McDonald, second only to Santa Claus? Ninety-six percent of American school children can identify Ronald McDonald before they can recognize their own name! Doesn’t that tell you something?</p>
<p>The fast-food industry spends about 33 billion dollars a year on advertising and most of it is done subliminally, meaning that the messages affect you without your conscious awareness; without you knowing it. You may notice the contents of a commercial, but they go right over your head and infect your subconscious with a “virus.” The purpose of advertising is to hit you where it hurts &#8212; emotionally. Recently, I watched a particular fast-food commercial showing a mom and young daughter eating burgers and fries. It seemed innocent enough, but here’s what the real message was: The mother was dressed in a business suit with her briefcase, and the young girl told her mom that she appreciated spending quality time like this with her. The mom guiltily looked at her daughter while both of them smiled and ate their French fries. A working mother watching this commercial would have subconsciously absorbed this message, felt guilty without even realizing it, and perhaps paid a visit to the fast food restaurant without consciously knowing the real reason.</p>

Many people failed to lose weight successfully because of the natural tendency to choose easy quick fix programs such as going on drastic diets, popping diet pills or persuaded to buy some exercise gadgets that simply do not work. In my other articles, I have addressed these issues and why such easy quick fix programs simply do not work in the long term and will not repeat them here.</p>
<p>To lose weight quickly, naturally and easily, you have to combine a healthy eating habit, correct cardio and strengthening exercises. We shall touch on the subject of how to lose weight quickly and naturally through a healthy eating program in this article.</p>
<p>• Increase Your Metabolism – Eat 5-6 small meals daily. It has been scientifically proven that by eating frequently, you will raise your body’s natural metabolism. That means your body will burn more fat naturally. You become a fat burning machine all day long.</p>
<p>• Eat Less Calories – Although you need to increase meal frequency to lose weight naturally, you must be mindful of your caloric consumption. Calories consumed must not exceed calories expanded for your daily energy. So keep your meals small and cut down on dietary fats as each gram of fat contains 9 calories whereas each gram of protein and carbohydrate contains only 4 calories.</p>
<p>• Avoid Starchy And Processed Flour Foodstuffs – These foodstuffs are easy to digest and turn into sugar rapidly and in turn get converted to body fat if these sugar calories are not used up as energy quickly. So ditch your cakes, cookies, pizzas, pastas, white rice etc Replace them with high fiber bread, legumes, brown rice, grains and nuts instead. So stay away from fast food restaurants as most fast food menus offer such foodstuff.</p>
<p>• Avoid All Sugary and Soft Drinks – Reason is obvious. Most if not all of these kind of drinks are heavily laced with sugar and sugar gets converted to body fat very quickly. You have to run on the treadmill for 20-30 minutes just to burn away a can’s worth of calories in a soft drink. Just imagine how much body fat you will accumulate if you drink just three cans of soft drinks a day along with 2 cups of sugar added coffee?</p>
<p>• Avoid All Forms Of Alcohol – There are about 7 calories in a gram of alcohol. Alcohol calories have zero nutritional value. They are just mere empty calories. Indulging in regular alcohol consumption not only wrecks your health, it will set back your weight loss program completely.</p>
<p>Oh….so you think this eating habit is difficult to implement or that you will miss your sugary foodstuffs and soft drinks? Not to worry. You may experience some withdrawal symptoms at first but after a week or two, you will be weaned off your sugar and simple carbohydrate cravings. Once your addictions to these foods are curbed, you will no longer have your sweet tooth and will naturally avoid such foodstuff.</p>
<p>Just by following these healthy eating habits, you will start to lose weight easily, quickly and naturally. Include cardio and weight lifting exercises into your weight loss program and your weight loss will be permanent.</p>

With new diets popping up on the Internet and in health and wellness journals all of the time, the phrase ‘yo-yo dieting’ says it all. If the South Beach Diet doesn’t work, there is always the Beverly Hills Diet, or the Cabbage Soup Diet…or…the list seems endless! If you are a serial dieter then you literally have no end to the options you can pick and choose from.</p>
<p>What you really need to know though, is that it is not the diet that controls the weight loss, it is the person behind the diet. If you have not yet come to understand what, if any, importance food weighs in your life, and you are bouncing from one diet plan to the next diet pill, to the next gym membership then you need to realize that it isn’t the diet that is failing you, but rather it is you failing the diet.</p>
<p>So what are some of the key things you can do to stay on track for a healthy lifestyle that involves a long term weight loss plan? Try these options:</p>
<p>1. Don’t follow a diet plan, but instead count your calories &#8211; You can buy a calorie chart at any bookstore and keep track for yourself how many calories you are consuming daily.</p>
<p>2. Stay away from fatty fast foods &#8211; Fast food restaurants may be fast and easy, but they serve up high calorie food that isn’t nutritious in the long run.</p>
<p>3. Make water your best friend &#8211; Water is an essential part of life. Everyone needs water because it helps to lubricate our joints. There are minerals in water that our body needs and our metabolism needs water in order to help us break down the protein in our body to supply energy. A person needs to drink at least 2 liters of water daily!</p>
<p>4. Stay away from alcohol &#8211; Alcohol dehydrates you. If you want some proof, remember your last hangover? After you came away with the sluggish, headachy feeling, were you craving a big glass of water?</p>
<p>5. Don’t skip meals &#8211; People mistakenly believe that if they skip meals they will lose weight? Skipping meals will just make your hungrier in the long-run and you will eat MORE food.</p>
<p>6. Stay active &#8211; Discipline yourself to be physically active. Don’t overdo it (and check with your doctor first). Create a program that you can work with. Set realistic goals and look around your environment for ways that will increase your physical activity without interrupting your day. Take advantage of any stairs you might have at home or in the office. Don’t take the elevator or escalator, take the stairs!</p>
<p>7. Gather support &#8211; Talk to your family members and loved ones. Involve them in your new healthy lifestyle. Plan family outings where there is a good amount of walking. Plan vacations with activities in mind that will involve the entire family. The commitment to lose weight is within yourself.</p>
